What are the most common mistakes beginners make with orchids

Overwatering is perhaps the biggest mistake orchid owners make. Orchids need to be watered only once a week during the growing season and even less frequently in winter.

Allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings is key. Overwatering leads to root rot and can be fatal to the plant

Orchids require a fast-draining, airy potting medium, not regular potting soil which retains too much moisture.

While orchids need bright, indirect light, many beginners don't provide enough. South or east-facing windows are ideal. Too little light leads to weak growth and failure to bloom.

Orchids thrive in humidity levels between 40-70%. Homes are often too dry, especially in winter. Misting, using a pebble tray or running a humidifier can help increase humidity around the plant.

It's best to avoid repotting orchids while they are in bloom. The stress can cause the buds to drop. Wait until after flowering to repot, when the plant is actively growing.

Some beginners make the mistake of cutting off all the roots, thinking they are rotten. Unless the roots are mushy and brown, it's best to leave them alone.
