Can You Grow an Avocado Tree From its Pit?

Remove and Clean the Pit: Gently remove the pit from the avocado, wash it thoroughly to remove any flesh, and let it dry.

Identify the Top and Bottom: The top of the pit is slightly pointy, and the bottom is flatter. It’s important to know this for proper placement in water.

Insert Toothpicks: Stick three or four toothpicks into the sides of the pit at a slight angle. These will support the pit when suspended in water.

Suspend in Water: Place the pit in a glass of water with the bottom submerged and the top exposed. Change the water regularly to keep it fresh.

Wait for Roots and Shoots: After a few weeks, you should see roots growing from the bottom and a sprout emerging from the top.

Transplant to Soil: Once the sprout is about 6-8 inches tall and roots are well-developed, transplant the pit into a pot with well-draining soil.

Care for the Seedling: Water regularly, provide plenty of sunlight, and keep the plant in a warm, sunny location.

Ongoing Maintenance: As the tree grows, it may need pruning and repotting. Avocado trees thrive in warm climates and may take several years to bear fruit.
