Orchids need bright, indirect light. South or east-facing windows are ideal. Avoid direct sunlight which can burn the leaves.
Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium orchids prefer medium to bright light. Cattleyas and Oncidiums need high light.
Water orchids once a week during the growing season, allowing the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings.
Use room temperature water and water until it drains out the bottom of the pot.
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. Never let orchids sit in water as this can cause root rot.
Orchids prefer 40-70% humidity. Increase humidity by misting, using a pebble tray, or growing in a terrarium.
Ideal temperatures are 60-80°F. Phalaenopsis and Vandas prefer warmer 65-85°F. Cymbidiums tolerate cooler 50-75°F.
