What makes 2024 a special year for the Northern Lights

The year 2024 is poised to be exceptional for viewing the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) due to the peak of the solar cycle, known as the Solar Maximum.

This phase, which occurs approximately every 11 years, is characterized by heightened solar activity, resulting in increased solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

These events send a greater number of charged particles toward Earth, enhancing the intensity and frequency of auroral displays.

As a result of this solar maximum, experts predict that the Northern Lights will be more visible not only in traditional viewing areas near the Arctic Circle but also at lower latitudes than usual.

This means that regions further south, including parts of the northern United States and southern Europe, may experience stunning auroras, making 2024 an exciting year for skywatchers.

The best time to witness the Northern Lights in 2024 will be from September to March, when the nights are longest and darkest.

With optimal conditions expected, this year presents a rare opportunity for travelers and enthusiasts to experience one of nature's most captivating light shows.
